Ararat Farm Newsletter June 2023

Hello Everyone,

It’s hard to believe that June is just about over and July is right around the corner! It has been a busy month with lots of big moves for animals as they all graze and root through all parts of the farm. There has not been a whole lot of new things going on. Normal chores and prepping for Summer Pork to open as well as seasonal bushhogging the fields to clip unwanted briers (blackberries). So let’s get started…

Summary for the month of June:

  • Herds’ fast grazing…

  • Piggies on the Move!

  • Ways to clean up fields

  • Little Farm Hand Discoveries!

The Herd

The herd is all doing well grazing through the fields pretty well. It has been pretty hot on them so they are grazing well but it’s been a challenging mix of the cows providing good trampling on the field and grazing efficiently. We have not had any new calves yet but several are really close to having calves. We are looking forward to seeing what new babies calves will be running around.

The Pigs

This month has been a busy month with pigs. The first of this month we moved the big pigs to the front of the ridge where we have a pond that needed some work. It needs to be dug and cleaned out and resealed. We plan to dig it with the excavator later but for now we utilized the big pigs to help reseal it. They of course loved the pig pond to plow their noses through and role in. The have now been moved to another section of field where we need some good tilling done. Their excellent noses will hopefully get the job done. It’s fun to use animal in the way God designed them to be to work the soil.

Little Pigs

It’s also been a big month for the little pigs. They recently moved out of the barn and are now in the pig field where they are enjoying the freedom to forage, play, eat and sleep in wide open spaces. They are not quite as personal as the big pigs but with a few more treats they will be very playful and personal.

Firefighter’s Clean Up

Sometimes we have to go through and cut down unwanted shrubbery and brush to keep fields clean and healthy. We leave some things that cows eat and benefit from but some growth just gets in the way or prevents grass growth. For a firefighter, the most efficient way to clean up is lighting it up. Had to include this fun flame.

Little Farm Hand Discoveries

As little Farm Hand continues to grow up and become apart of all the adventures and chores on the farm it has provide some fun discoveries to experience. Several turtles will cross our path as we run fence for cows. Due to the season even a baby bird waiting for it’s mother will show itself to an adventurous toddler. God’s creation is such a blessing to be apart of both in the world around us and in the eyes of a child learning.

That’s A Wrap

Well, that pretty much sums up the month of June. It was a quck month but a lot of stuff was crammed in as always on the farm. We thank you for visiting us today and hope that you have a wonderful rest of your day. Until next time…
