Ararat Farm Newsletter September 2022

Well the taste of fall has entered Ararat Farm. The days have been still a little hot with cool and earlier nights starting to come in. The fields are in that full stage growth and everything has the feeling of welcoming the Autumn season in. Even the sunsets look and feel different. This month has been rolling pretty smoothly as we wrap up Fall Beef orders and prep to sort cows. We have had ground work done on some of the roads on the farm as well as working towards connecting another spring into our water system up the ridge. Lots of planning and things to organize.

Summary for the month of September:

  • Another New Calf

  • Piggies in their new digs!

  • Road work with Big Equipment!

  • Little Farm Hand

The Herd

The herd is doing well this month. Unfortunately the spring the feeds up the ridge stopped flowing so we had to move the cows to some other fields sooner then planned. But in spite of water issues the cows have looked really good this month. We have done twice daily moves which gives them the cream of the grazing making them fat and happy not to mention spoiled.

New Calf!

We had another new calf this month. An adorable little south pole heifer. She sticks pretty close to mama but is healthy and playful! Always fun to have little calves running around.

The Pigs

This summer we fenced more of the woods for the pigs to have fresh ground and give the old paddock a rest. The pigs moved into the new ground this month which they have thrived in. We have a good acorn crop so far this year which will make their flavor really good this winter.

New Road through the Creek!

This month we had some major ground work done to the road in and out of the creek crossing. The roads have been rutted out so badly that is was rough and damaging equipment. So we go a dozer in to smooth everything out and rock to help hold the ground. This will help so much with going through and not wreaking our equipment.

Little Farm Hand

We go some new layer chickens for our personal eggs and Little Farm Hand has really enjoyed catching them and picking them up. It’s so fun to see the joy in the accomplishment of a challenge on a toddler’s face.

That’s A Wrap

Thus we come to the end of September. This year has floated on by rather quickly. The summer comes to a close welcoming in Autumn. We thank you for visiting us to day and hope you have a wonderful rest of your day. Until next time.
