Ararat Farm Newsletter March 2023

March, you have come and now you are going. What a wet and fickle weather pattern you have left behind for us to have worked with. We hope that March has been a blessed month for you all as well readers. It has been one of slow and steady work and prepping for the spring season to kick into full gear. We have been focusing on finishing pressing projects with the excavator (as well as doing a few repairs on it) before the spring rotations and farm chores get more time consuming. So, March has not been crazy but steadily busy as we prepare for a very full next few weeks to jump into the spring season.

Summary for March:

  • New babies on the farm!

  • Piggies last days in the barn

  • Excavator projects

  • Always a water repair

The Herd

The cows have done well over the last month. On some of the hot days they were a little limited due to the fact they have heavy winter coats still with 70 degree temps. We currently have the main herd on the ridge grazing mostly hay while we have the bulls a new stockers in one of the lower field starting to rotate through the early grass (in addition to hay). The main herd is most definitely ready to graze green grass.

New Calves

We have had 2 new calves added to the herd this month! They are healthy and spunky little things as they stay close to the safety of their mamas. We have several more on the way.

The Pigs

The pigs are still in the barn for about one or two more weeks. We are getting 2 more so are going to hold them in a little longer to train the new comers to the fence. They are all very ready to be on pasture again!

Excavator Wrap Up

Over the last month there have been some projects on the farm that we purposefully got the excavator for which we have been trying to accomplish before the spring season really kicks in (as well as the excavator will be rented out to another business in North Carolina). It turned out that after some use there was leaking and we had to make some repairs on it. It is now up and running well and projects are finished!

Always a Water Repair

A month is never complete without at least one water repair. With the last several weeks of warm then freezing temperatures we have run the risk of freezing water lines. Thankfully nothing burst at all but we did find some leaks that had gone undetected. Of course dogs and cats seem to think their help is a requirement so they must be there to help (never are they actually helpful).

That’s all Folks

Well, that’s a wrap, we are working up to a busy season so we look forward to providing lots of pictures for the next Newsletter. We are coming up to Spring Beef so keep an eye out for those emails. We hope you have a wonderful rest of your day and thank you for visiting today.
